Yeah. I walked into the Verizon store and they told me a replacement would be $200 as well and they weren't allowed to even open up the case. Typical Apple B#LL$#!T IMO.

Hey, our insurance policy on Val's will cut a check and send the $$ after we pay the $25 replacement fee. If she wanted she could pick another one. Better than having to buy a whole new one, I guess. Good luck Kwak.

After a 2 year stint with Verizon and being owned by a Galaxy S3, I was very happy when my contract expired. I went with a no contract $40/month plan and a throwaway phone that does 86% of what the Samsung did. I plan on destroying my phones on a regular basis just so I can upgrade without guilt.

Anyone want to buy an S3 in really great shape?

I called Verizon and I am not authorized to make any decisions on the account. They just give general information. So I called back and handed my wife the phone. Here's the Cliff's Notes version:

1: we have no sort of insurance whatsoever on the phone. Had we had insurance on them, it would could a $90 deductible to replace the phone. Because we don't we must either pay the full $550 or wait for a promotional on refurbished equipment

2: We're 8 months into a 2 year contract so I cannot upgrade.

3: I could have the number mapped back on to my old Galaxy Fascinate phone, but the battery is also on its last legs and the speaker is shot from water damage. I need to purchase a new OEM battery and charger.

4: In my sleep deprived state I have misplaced the phone.

I'm seriously thinking of taking the phone in to one of those fix-it shops. How expensive can it be?

I may have missed it but who's your carrier? There are a bunch of fairly inexpensive unlocked Windows phones

Yeah, that "authorization" irritates the crap out of me even though I'm the one who pays and manages all of the finances.

Anyway, maybe you could get a one of Verizon's low end smart phones or just a phone until such time or money permits a new iphone. Look at your absolute needs and what you are willing to expend. I'd send you an extra if I had one.

Worse comes to worse, I just have them reactive my old Galaxy. It's around here somewhere. I was just using it the other day. Same with my wife's old iPhone 4.

Still, I'm pissed that *poof!* just like that my 5S is gone. I fished both my Galaxy and the iPhone 4 out of the toilet and the rice bag trick worked. Just bad luck but once the 5S was in the washing machine I didn't know what to do.

Bad news:

1: iPhone 5S shorted out after the fact. Inside is corrosion free. No insurance. New motherboard required; phone is dead.
2: Samsung Galaxy Fascinate phone (CH-1500) holds a charge for 1 hour only. It's hard to find an OEM battery for a phone that's 4 years old and the phone runs like a dog.

Good news:

1: I was able to transfer the number myself to the Samsung. It will be temporary, because:
2: If I'm able to find my wife's old iPhone 4 I can transfer the number over to that. I'll be buying a waterproof case of course.

It doesn't look like I'll be replacing the iPhone 5S. About the best I can hope for is getting some kind of rebate from the Apple Store. It'd be cool if I could bring in all my junked Apple products to get credit to an iPad but they're out to make a buck. The Verizon store can't hook me up at all.

Addendum: the horse has come home: I found my wife's old iPhone 4. It was in the coat of a pocket I forget was mine because it's got fur in it. I thought it was my wife's.

Bad news: we can't remember the PIN but oh well... KLUGE OVER!

Good news: my iPhone SE still works after 1 year. Joey would likely get the old (deactivated) iPhone to play Super Mario Run; my old 5S is completely dead again.
