Default Electrical issue

ok, so upon doing some rewiring of an outlet and adding a new outlet to the circuit we lost power to the entire circuit. i checked all the outlets related to circuit (that i can tell) and the wire connections are fine. the hot to ground reads 120v and the neutral to ground reads 120v, but nothing has power when plugged in. what is wrong and how do i fix it before i pull my hair out an just bite the bullet to call an electrician.

I'm not an electrician, so kinda pulling this out of my .... I don't have a volt meter, so don't know what it should read. But it doesn't sound right to have 120 v between neutral and ground. Could you have some connection wrong, maybe a hot/neutral reversed? I just use one of those little testers that lights up when put in neutral and hot sides. Hopefully somebody else has an idea too...

the volt meter has 2 prongs to put into the outlet or to check cables. It just shows voltage. I need one that says hey @$$hole fix this wire here. Lol

What color are your wires? Is this an old house?
It sounds like you have the ground reversed with the neutral. Or maybe the hot.

Hot to Neutral should = 120v
Hot to Ground should = 120v
Neutral to Ground should = about 0v

easy to tell white neutral black hot and bare copper which is the ground. I thought the white had no voltage but it does upon touching the ground and neutral wires. Though at the time they hot was also connected to the outlet which would mean the voltage was passing the neutral, no? Do i have a tear in the neutral somewhere along the line?

If you are sure that your Ground is wired correctly, try reversing Hot and Neutral.

I wonder if when you stuffed the outlet back in the wall the ground contacted the neutral connection? that'd be pretty easy to do.

If you have a series of outlets, it may be that one outlet has H and N reversed.

And turn the power off at the breaker first, right?

You need one of these:

It will tell you what you wired incorrectly.
